Building Envelope Design: the Search for Healthier Indoor Environments

December 12th, 2017

Flynn v. Halifax (Regional Municipality) involves the failure of the design and construction of a home for an environmentally sensitive family. The design called for building methods and materials that would reduce the levels of environmental contaminants such as mold, gases and chemicals inside the home. When serious defects in the house were discovered, the owners successfully brought an action grounded in breach of contract and negligence against the parties involved in its construction. The concern for healthier indoor environments and improved air quality has grown worldwide in recent years. Various groups such as the United States Environmental ProtectionAgency and Health Canada have examined indoor air pollution and conditions that produce harmful biological contaminants within the walls or ventilation systems of buildings.
