Evaluation and Enforcement of Radon Mitigation System Installations in New Jersey

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) implemented a mandatory certification program on May 13, 1991. Certification is mandatory for any person who sells radon/radon progeny devices; test for radon/radon progeny, or mitigates radon in buildings. Staff activities required for implementation of this program included the development of inspection protocols and enforcement procedures, for mitigation businesses and the systems they install. Since March of 1992, the DEP has conducted over 126 mitigation system inspections and initiated 20 enforcement actions regarding these inspections. Mitigation systems installations, inspected by the DEP, are evaluated for effectiveness, utilizing short-term measurement devices.
