The research looked at what pollutants collect in heat recovery ventilator (HRV) ducting and whether ducts can be effectively cleaned using two types of duct cleaning equipment: a truck mounted system and a portable high powered vacuum. Both rigid and flexible ducts were examined. Intake ducts in particular were found to be heavily contaminated with bugs, dust, dirt and lint, and were very difficult to clean, especially where duct runs were long and inaccessible.
